Many states allow LPNs to practice certain intravenous therapy procedures. However, every state requires documented initial training, supervised clinical experience and ongoing competency assessment. We offer comprehensive IV therapy program with post test and skill validation.
This comprehensive hands-on educational program designed to provide in-depth knowledge of intravenous therapy for new graduates, LPNs and nurses who return to the work force. Participants obtain venipuncture skills to insert peripheral IV catheter.
Criteria for completion: Requires attendance for the entire activity, IV skill validation, post test with 80% passing score, and submission of completed evaluation. Certificate of completion will be issued upon successful completion of the program.
Class Contents: Define intravenous therapy, indications for IV therapy, overview of state specific regulations and legal considerations of IV therapy, review of fluid and electrolytes and acid-base balance as it applies to intravenous therapy, grouping and classifications of IV drugs, review of IV administration method, measures to prevent medication errors, patient assessment prior to, during and post IV drug administration, review of circulatory system as it applies to IV therapy, selecting peripheral veins appropriate for venipuncture and IV therapy, infection Control measures, overview of short term and long term vascular access devices, equipment and supplies selection for venipuncture and IV therapy, IV drip calculation, instituting patient and caregiver education program, IV catheter insertion and troubleshooting technique, routine care and maintenance, central venous access device assessment, nursing measures to prevent and manage potential complications related to intravenous therapy, documentation guidelines. Hands-on session includes demonstration PIV catheter insertion by the instructor and practice by the students.
Knowledge is assessed with a post test. Skill validation includes venipuncture and IV catheter insertion by attendees under supervision of a preceptor. Certificate of completion is awarded up on successful completion of the entire program.
The Phlebotomy and Lab Specimen Collection program provides hands-on training for clinicians to obtain venous blood specimen from patients through venipuncture as a part of their job responsibilities.
Objectives: Patient Rights regarding phlebotomy and specimen collection, basic anatomy and physiology as it applies to phlebotomy, methods of phlebotomy and specimen collection, precautions and contraindications of phlebotomy and specimen collection, venipuncture techniques, prevention and management of complication.
Following demonstration by the instructor, attendees practice venipuncture and specimen collection on a practice arm. Certificate with 2.0 CE contact hours will be awarded upon completion of the entire program.
